  1. Buy an electric car

Electric cars emit zero carbon dioxide while driving and therefore represent a smart and obvious choice to drive in a climate-friendly way – and in style. 2. Rent an electric vehicle

Despite that electric cars are becoming more and more fitting any wallet, the respective financing options are broadly available and charging, maintenance and parking costs are a fraction of those for an ICE car, perhaps committing to buying or leasing it for long-term is not what one might be looking for at the moment. 3. Use e-bike

Electric bikes give you multiple benefits of fast and sustainable yet affordable ride, with almost zero parking headache. You could either rent on a case-by-case basis or buy a monthly subscription which will save you some money if you use the service regularly. With broad accessibility and conveniency to use, e-bikes make substantial positive impact on climate helping avoid carbon emissions at scale. 4. Take public transport… oh, wait – better electric public transport

Public means of mass passenger transport carry much more passengers per 1 unit of power (horsepower or kW) that individual cars, therefore they are much more efficient than personal ICE cars. Carbon emissions savings are further enhanced if you use electric public transport like electric buses, trams or metro. 

E.g. use Dubai Metro by RTA for your zero-emissions commuting day-by-day.

5. Get your kids to school by a school bus instead of your own car/chauffeur

As in case with regular mass public transport, school buses are more energy-efficient and emit much less per one passenger than personal cars. They safely and conveniently take your kids from your neighborhood to school and back at a modest cost of monthly subscription. For example, Emirates Transport currently operates over 8500 school buses and transports well over 200 thousand students and schoolchildren daily all over the UAE. Another cool thing is that a few years ago they announced that they were testing electric school buses to gradually make their entire fleet emissions-free, and we hope this will start materializing rather sooner than later.

6. Buy rooftop solar to charge your EV

Electric vehicles do not emit carbon dioxide while driving. However, you need to charge them, and the carbon footprint of your charging largely depends on the source of electricity you use. If you simply charge it from the regular grid, either at home or at a public charger, it uses average grid energy mix which can be a combination of various types of generation, from both renewables and fossil fuels (whatever sources the energy generation company is using). And things of course get much worse if the electricity is produced purely from emissions-intense fossil fuels like coal. To avoid that, you can have your own home solar installation to power your EV and your entire home from the sun. And the good thing is that, with the price of solar power equipment continuously going and multiple financing options being broadly available, household solar solutions have become economically attractive. To complete the picture, as you actually generate your own electricity for your home and export the surplus to the grid, this can increase the value of your property and also help dilute the average grid energy mix with greener energy.

8. Buy green electricity from your utility

Purchases of green electricity from the grid is usually made possible through so called green tariffs where all or a part of the electricity you buy is matched with units of renewable energy supplied into the grid by energy generation companies. By signing up to such tariff, you help the grid to see consumers’ demand for greener energy and specifically account for revenues of its renewables business thus supporting broader investments in renewables and acceleration of Net Zero transition. Such tariffs are available in many countries, e.g. in Europe, both to corporate and individual users. In Dubai, at the time of writing, we do not know of any green tariffs available to consumers yet, however, the good thing is that dealing with DEWA you can be sure that a substantial part of their electricity is already sourced from renewables, in particular, from Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park actively developed just outside of Dubai and having already reached 2,63 GW MW of installed capacity, to grow to 5 GW by 2030 as a part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the city’s energy requirements from renewables by 2050.     

9. Charge your EV during the daytime

If your utility is fully or partially powered by solar power, it is natural that the electricity output is high during the daytime and zero at night. Of course, some utilities have energy storage capacities to be able to balance supply and demand, however, these are quite expensive options. So choosing to charge your EV during the daytime (e.g. at your work hours or while shopping at a mall equipped with solar-powered EV chargers), you can really make your contribution to help balance the grid. A few years ago BMW ran a pilot project in California called ChargeForward together with a local utility powered mainly by solar where they offered additional rewards to EV owners who agreed to adjust the charging profile of their vehicle charging apps in a way to allow daytime charging only to help balance supply and demand. We hope such initiatives will also materialize in the UAE and in the broader MENA rather sooner than later. 

10. Clear water, blue sky

Green transportation options are not limited to ground vehicles only. Motor boats and ships are usually powered by fossil fuel and produce heavy pollution. The extreme example is that a large container ship each emits as much carbon as more than 12,000 ICE cars. At the same time, you can take your personal action by buying or renting an electric vessel. And it is not only about ships. Large investments are also made in research and development of electric planes, which so far remain a rare animal in the skies, but with numerous promising and ambitious projects under way, we are sure that zero emission flights will become a routine rather than science fiction very soon.
